At some point of time, we all must have been part of some hawan either wilfully or forcibly. There is so much lore about hawan that it can bring rain, do miracles, and even cause childbirth!!! All this might not be in our experience, but we certainly know two things that happen, one is Air Pollution that it causes (does it?) and another that there is a distinct smell of a hawan.
Hawan is a huge science which can broadly be divided in following parts:
1) Mantra used in Hawan
2) Science of building hawan kund
3) Types of Samagri used in Hawan
As the entire science is too big to deal with at one place, in this blog we shall explore only the significance of Hawan Samagri. This can further be boiled down to following parts,
1) Catalyst: This can be Ghee or in some specific type of Hawan it can be oil.
2) Wood Used: Mango, Sandal-Wood, Agar Wood, Tagar Wood, Deodar (Cedar), Dhak Or Palash, Bilva, Pipal, Bargad(Banyan), Shami, Gular (Wild Fig), Ber etc
3) Samagri: Jow, Til, Rice, Makhana, Kismis (Rasins), Coconut, Almond, Chandan (Sandalwood), Deodar, Agar, Indrayan, Jatamansi, Chandni, Tagar, Peepal, Pista, Tambul (Betel Nut), Kapoor(Camphor), Kesar(Saffron), Guggul, Ashwagandh, Nagarmotha, Nagkesar, Tejapatra, Kulanjan, Jaiphal(Nutmeg), Laung(Clove), Neem, cow dung, jaggery etc.
Scientific research has been performed on the effect of burning of these materials in fire. The chemical transformation of the herbal / plant medicinal properties of Hawan leads to release of medicinal phytochemicals. The method of incinerating herbs in the fire to produce medicinal smoke and taking it through the nose has numerous benefits.
Listed below are the benefits of smoke generated from hawan based on papers published in various scientific journals:
1) Saffron - Antihypertensive, antitussive (prevent/relieve cough), antioxidant, antidepressant, anticonvulsant (prevent severity of epileptic fits)
2) Jatamansi - Increase in seizure threshold, Inhibit the electroshock convulsions
3) Coconut - Inhibit convulsions, increase GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) and serotonin level
4) Sesame seeds - Antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer
5) Clove – Analgesic (reduce pain), antioxidant (anti-aging effect), anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic (reduce anxiety), anticonvulsant.
6) Nutmeg - Reduce severity of seizures.
7) Nagkesar - Anti-inflammatory, antipyretic (anti fever).
